Minutes of the Committee Meeting of the DBA held on Wednesday 7 November 2018 at the Isca Centre.

3. Previous Minutes, Matters Arising
3.1 The minutes of the last meeting were accepted and signed as correct.
3.2 Matters arising. The chairman stated that for members attending Director’s courses half the course cost would be paid by the county and half by the club. Travel expenses are not included.
4. Treasurer's Report
An advert for the Devon Congress will go into the December issue of English Bridge.
5. Section Reports
5.1 North.Bev Purvis, an EBU liaison officer visited and was looking at why club member numbers nationally are dropping.
5.2. East. Four new teams recruited to Division three. Preparations are underway for John Woolcott weekend 12/13 Jan 2019. No success on replacing J Jenkins as chair. Tim Barnes co-opted to help.
5.3. South. A club section member requested a new computer. Their previous computer is quite old and no longer allows updates of the scoring program. It was agreed that a new computer would be bought by the section.
A member inquired about prize payment for the Winter Pairs 2017-2108. According to the bank account a cheque for £48 has been issued and paid.
5.4. West. The next charity event will be in Feb 2019 rather than Nov 2018.
6. Congress Report
During the meeting the committee was given a tour of the bridge room at the Livermead House Hotel to assess its suitability for the Devon Congress in 2020. It was agreed that the large ball room and adjoining lounge with sea view is more than adequate for hosting up to 55 tables. Teas and coffees would be available in a lounge outside the playing area at a discounted rate. There is car parking for 110 spaces. The date for the congress is 3-5 April 2020.
Another hotel in Dawlish was suggested and will be considered in the future if needed.
This year's Devon Congress will be held at the Torak Hotel.on 23-31 March 2019. Entry forms were issued to committee members for distribution.
7. Tournament Report
7.1 Tournaments: Only 10 teams entered for this season's Devon Knock-out teams event.
7.2 Western League:
Andrew Leslie has agreed to continue in his role as Western League Administrator for 2019/20. Ann Slee is retiring as Tournament Administrator at the end of the current season so we will need a volunteer for 2019/20 onwards. A general information document was sent to section selectors to clarify requirements of the Administrator.
B & C Division: So far 2 matches have been played vs E Wales and vs Avon. The next match will be hosted by West on 24th Nov to be run by Don Pearson. Teams of 8. All other scheduled matches will be Team of 4 apart from South vs Somerset in April, to be agreed later.
A Division: All teams of 4. Selectors Warner and Stefan have a pool of 18 players to select from.
A non-affiliated club has asked if they can be issued with Bridgemates. It was agreed that this would be possible if the club affiliates with the EBU. An alternative to Bridgemates was suggested using BridgeTabs on tablets or smartphones. Another way mentioned is through the BriAn app.Both Bridge Tabs and BriAn require a goodwifi connection.
A second teacher's network meeting is planned for Wed 28th November. Concern over log jam of students joining regular duplicates. A teachers' sub meeting is planned to find out what clubs can do to encourage students to join duplicates. EBU/EBED have been approached about holding a course for new bridge teachers. No response as yet.
Laura Porro visit – Exeter and Newton Abbot want to host and have chosen their topics. Torquay are interested but not chosen topics as yet. Plymouth have not replied and will be contacted again. There will be a Sunday session for more experienced players.
It was agreed that a grant would be made available from DBA for teaching teachers
A question was asked about the current shareholders. A motion was proposed to include the Chairman as a shareholder. Having one Devon committee member would help with gaining feedback from events such as the upcoming EBU AGM. G Clements to follow up and find out how many shareholders are permitted.
